Survey reveals country living offers better lifestyle than city life

July 2007

The perception that living in a country or rural community holds many advantages over city life is attracting young families and professionals employed full time within the city, according to a new survey by allrealestate.co.nz. This growing popularity of country living has also triggered a sharp shift in demand with the real estate website experiencing a 20.17 per cent* growth in the number of listings in its new ‘Rural /Lifestyle’ section.

The new ‘Rural /Lifestyle’ section now includes options to search properties from: lifestyle, cropping, dairy, farmlet, horticulture, livestock, mixed farming and other viticulture.

“Lifestyle blocks are proving to be a good investment delivering people the best of both worlds, country living whilst still remaining relatively close to cities or towns,” said Shaun Di Gregorio, allrealestate.co.nz’s general manager.

The survey revealed Kiwi’s preferences for living on a country property are dominated by lifestyle and environmental considerations rather than the opportunity to use land productively.

§         For 51.52 per cent of respondents, the type of lifestyle a rural setting offers such as peace and quiet along with space and privacy were amongst the most common responses. Some city workers also indicated they would be accepting of a daily commute given the advantages which they perceive rural living gives them.

§         Environmental considerations were high on the priority list with a quarter of respondents (22.22 per cent) seeking cleaner living, fresh air and organic produce. While some young families were suggested they would be drawn to the fact that they could bring their children up in a relatively safe and healthy environment with fewer crime problems.

§         Economic considerations were also appealing with 17.17 per cent of Kiwi’s declaring cheaper housing and the reduced cost of living as a major incentive to relocate to a rural community.

§         Only 9.09% of respondents would consider a country property as an opportunity to use the land productively or to enhance employment options.

“There are an increasing number of purchasers who are ‘lifestylers’ in the truest sense of the word. This group of buyers has no intention of using their land for agricultural purposes. They are merely looking for a change and a means to improve their quality of life,” Mr Di Gregorio said.

Mr Di Gregorio believes advances in technology with mobile communications and broadband internet have provided greater freedom to work from home rather than needing to be 100 per cent office based.

“We see this trend continuing to gather momentum as technology becomes even more sophisticated and thereby connecting people more remotely and reducing the disadvantage of daily peak hour travel for a growing number of people,” he said.

“There is so much choice today about where and how we live our lives and property buyers have become increasingly diverse. Through allrealestate.co.nz’s dedicated ‘Rural /Lifestyle’ section, we aim to maximize our consumers real estate search needs and help them find the property of their dreams,” said Mr Di Gregorio.

Survey: The online survey of 100 New Zealanders was undertaken on the allrealestate.co.nz website in July 2007.
